#tbt to a year ago when I failed this lift at 275, which would have been a five pound PR. Today, my PR is 315 which I pulled at the end of December. If I can add 40 pounds to my PR in that same amount of time I’ll be astounded. Basically, that calls for me pulling 350 at raw nationals in July. Hahaha. I dint think my progress is quite linear anymore, but a girl can do work anyways! #powerlifting
MY LIFE HAS BEEN A LIE!
I just discovered that I do the weirdest deadlifts. I pick up the barbell like I’m going to do a sumo deadlift, then I do stiff legged deadlifts (or maybe Romanian?) for the whole set except the last one when I put the barbell down again like a sumo deadlift. Does anyone know if this is bad for my back/progress? If it’s not I’m just going to keep doing it this way, but I might change if it makes me look less stupid too…
PS the reason I do it this way is because it’s comfortable for me to pick up the barbell from the ground if I squat down, it helps me keep my belly in.
I just want to remind you guys that in April 2012 I did not know how to do a proper deadlift. By May I was doing a proper conventional deadlift. By October I pulled 200#. By May 2013 I pulled 300#. I went from not knowing how to deadlift in April 2012 to competing in my first powerlifting meet in April 2013. Now I put it to you… why are you afraid to look stupid or to fail? Even the people that you look up to used to have NO IDEA what they were doing. I srs want to film me doing what I’m trying to describe above… shit why did no one ever help me? Thank god for YouTube.
Your yearly reminder that two Aprils ago I didn’t know how to deadlift.
For those asking. My grip a year ago vs today. It’s not for everyone and it takes time building up to it. Today is the first time I worked a super wide grip with my coach, so still dunno how strong I am in this position. May use it in competition or just for accessory work. Dunno yet! #DatDecreasedROM
Q:Another question. Can you give advice on how to position your arms for bench pressing? Like what happens with your elbows. And other advice?
Well to start, you should just put them where they feel comfortable and build strength there.
eventually, you’d want to work out to a wide grip (if you’re competing) in order to decrease the ROM. A wide grip naturally places strain in a different way on your shoulders and pecs, so you need to have them fairly strong before it won’t hurt to have a wide grip.
I’ll make a before and after of how close together my grip was when I first stated a year ago versus today when I used almost as wide as you’re allowed to in competition.
Also, it’s only been the past two or three weeks that we’ve started working a wider grip as my bench has gotten a bit stronger with my “natural” grip.
Finally, note it’s okay to have a staggered grip. Maybe one arm is longer or one side is stronger… it’s okay to stagger your grip in bench while you work to fix those asymmetries (if you can fix them).
Q:Now that you have conquered the world of powerlifting do you think you'll run a marathon again ? Or continue to get even stronger in your lifts ?
Definitely stronger. I’m actually good at lifting and Steve believes in me.
However, whenever my mom does Hawaii and New Hampshire I’m gunna do those marathons with her. We did too many of her last few states together to not finish them off! I know it’ll take me out of the lifting game… I’ll be less competitive for a while… but I can’t give up that experience with mi madre!
Q:Dicy what was your first pet? Were you ever afraid of dogs when you were little?
Hmmm we always had doggies and kitties growing up… but MY fiest pet that I’ve taken care 100% my own is Bentley! Tho I did have a cat in high school who I shared with my high school sweetheart. His name was Lord Curious!
I was only ever afraid of that dog in Sand Lot!
Q:Hi! How do you do? What's your fav kind of burger? Do you have da cake?! Common name you use to address others?
Anything involving blue cheese!
Hmmm not sure what that means?
Probably “Doctor” more than anything because of my teachers. Of course I call them all by first name… idk!
